A native New Orleanian and recent New Yorker, Ethan is a working composer, lyricist, and music director currently in Asheville, North Carolina.
"Andersen is a smart writer. He knows how to write an incredible song." (Theater in the Now). Ethan's songs are "nimble across a variety of styles, from musical scenes and frothy uptempo to vampy torch and searing heartbreak." (Talkin' Broadway).
In 2014, Andersen's original musical, HeadVoice, premiered at Elon University and, in 2015, was selected and produced by the New York Musical Festival. "Complete with rich harmonies and a book, music, and lyrics by Ethan Andersen, this show hits home in a charming, truthful way." (Times Square Chronicles).
In 2016, Ethan's children's musical, Rootabaga Express!, premiered at Flat Rock Playhouse and is produced every summer at the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. YOUlogy, a musical Ethan wrote with Charlie Johnson, received an NYC industry reading May 2018 starring Lianah Sta. Ana and Conor Ryan. Ethan has written two educational musicals, Letterland Alive! (based on the popular children's phonics program) and Greetings from North Carolina! (the comprehensive state history of NC told by Aliens on a roadtrip) which have toured the North Carolina school system for the past four years. Ethan is a proud member of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, ASCAP, and the Dramatists Guild.
As a music director, Andersen was MD/Conductor of the Saturday Night Fever national tour, as well as MD/Conductor of Elon University's Music Theatre program, one of the top MT programs in the country. "Ethan Andersen brilliantly navigated the difficult score, with the orchestra sounding the best it has in recent memory under his baton." (Classical Voice of North Carolina). Ethan has also arranged, orchestrated, and conducted for BCEFA's Easter Bonnet and Broadway Backwards. Currently, Ethan is proud to be the Resident MD & Writer in Residence at Flat Rock Playhouse, the state theater of North Carolina. In this position, Andersen oversees all musical productions, orchestrates, conducts, teaches, and writes a brand new musical each season.
